Creating a better future through humanistic inquiry and practice.
Start Your ApplicationOur Master of Arts in Engaged & Public Humanities offers a strong foundation across the humanities through theoretical study and practical experience. Become a scholar-practitioner and apply advanced humanities training for a better future across a variety of public humanities jobs and industries.
Our curriculum combines humanities disciplines with an interdisciplinary approach. With 30 credits of core courses, electives, an internship and a capstone project, you’ll apply a humanities lens to inspire positive social change.

Work with a faculty advisor to put what you learn into practice during the mentored internship, a summer experience done in tandem with your capstone. Previous internships have been at the Brookings Institution, the Smithsonian and the United Nations.

The capstone project integrates humanities scholarship with internships or field research projects. Designed to connect with a public audience, students share their work using multimedia and creative formats from podcasts to crochet.

Our program is designed so all students, including working professionals, can fit the degree to their schedule and goals. We offer part- and full-time options, evening courses and a capstone that can be spread over two summers.

Alumna Chanel Williams’ Public Humanities Report examined how cultural institutions could serve as equitable “third spaces” to bridge both the learning and social gaps created by COVID. It was inspired by her grandmother’s home, where Chanel’s love of museums began. Her house served as both the historical record of our family—with pictures, books, and antiques—and a gathering place where traditions were passed down. Cultural institutions remind her of that role, and her goal was to provide frameworks to help them develop integrated communications plans that could tell those stories more effectively.
Chanel Williams, M.A. ’22Take part in academic discovery, community engagement and personal growth through our Master of Arts in Engaged & Public Humanities to create a future where the humanities are at the forefront of social transformation.
