Why should I apply for the MA Program in Engaged & Public Humanities (ENPH)?
The MA Program in Engaged & Public Humanities (ENPH) will deepen your knowledge of the humanities while helping you develop the skills and creative vision to apply them out in the world. The program offers academic and real world rigor, flexibility, and hands-on mentoring, everything you need to succeed in the public humanities and related fields. You’ll learn how to apply the humanities in dynamic environments that address contemporary issues like the climate crisis, global health threats, artificial intelligence, big data, and cultural division and diversity.
What kind of careers can I have with an MA in Engaged & Public Humanities?
The ENPH degree opens up numerous career paths, some in traditional public humanities roles (arts organizations, museums, etc.) and others in non-profits, government, industry, educational associations and institutions, and in corporate environments. Examples include: Coordinator/Project Manager; Digital Marketing Content Writer; Editor/Content Manager; Publications Manager; Public Policy Researcher; Media Manager; Operations Coordinator; Curator; Outcomes Project Director; Member Engagement Specialist; Research Associate, and many more.
What are the degree requirements for the MA in Engaged & Public Humanities?
- Four 3-credit core courses.
- Four 3-credit elective courses in a disciplinary or interdisciplinary area chosen from across the campus.
- Two 3-credit mentored Internships and/or Field Research Projects.
- A capstone project that integrates the student’s humanities scholarship with the internships or field research projects, designed to reach a public audience.

What is the class size and culture of the program?
The MA Program in Engaged & Public Humanities admits between ten and twenty students per year with a student to faculty ratio of 2:1. Our goal is to carefully mentor students as they pursue their individual paths. The culture of ENPH is collaborative and experiential. We encourage all of our students to “think outside the box.”
What is the time frame to finish the program?
The ENPH Program offers full-time and part-time options. See our Academics page for more details. Full-time students can complete the program in two semesters and a summer. Part-time students complete the program in four semesters, plus two summers.
When do I need to submit my application?
Our priority deadline is January 15. The application fee for 2021 was waived for students who met this deadline. After the priority deadline, there was a $90 fee for all applications. For International Students, the deadline to submit applications is on March 1. For Domestic Students, the deadline to submit applications is April 1.
What are the application requirements for the MA Program in Engaged & Public Humanities?

- English Proficiency: TOEFL / IELTS (if required)

Do prospective students need to submit GRE scores?

How much will it cost to attend the MA Program in Engaged & Public Humanities?
For the 2022-2023 AY, the cost is approximately $2,358 per credit plus living expenses. For exact figures and updated costs, please visit the Tuition & Fees page.
Do you offer scholarships or research assistant positions?
Yes! We do offer up to a 3-credit merit-aid based scholarship to applicable students. There are also many research assistant and other part-time positions available on campus.
How long has the program been around?
We admitted our inaugural class in the Fall of 2021! However, we have been planning and developing the program since 2015 and offered a non-credit Certificate that students praised for its effectiveness.
Where are you located?
The MA Program in Engaged & Public Humanities is located on Georgetown University’s Main Campus at 37th and O Sts, NW in Washington DC.
Our location puts us in close proximity to hundreds of humanities and humanities-oriented organizations such as: the Smithsonian Institution; the Folger Shakespeare Library; the Shakespeare Theatre; the Library of Congress; HumanitiesDC; the National Endowment for the Humanities, and the National Humanities Alliance.
What should I do if I’ve been exposed, or potentially exposed, to someone with COVID-19?
According to the Georgetown Coronavirus (COVID-19) Resource Center, you are required to follow these steps:
- Wear a mask around others for ten days after the potential exposure.
- Get tested five days after your most recent exposure.
- Stay home and get tested if you develop symptoms. Please report your symptoms to the Public Health team by completing the COVID-19 Symptom Check-In survey. If you receive a positive test result from a third-party provider (i.e., not One Medical) or at-home antigen test, please report your result through the COVID-19 Test Result Submission form.
