2022 National Humanities Conference, Los Angeles

The National Humanities Conference invites both public and academic humanities practitioners to address local and national challenges through the lens of the humanities and to spark innovative collaborations, conversations, and research while highlighting the impact and relevance of the humanities in everyday American life. This year’s conference will take place at the Westin Bonaventure Hotel in Los Angeles on November 10-13, 2022. The event will also include virtual programming on November 3-4.
In 2022, the National Humanities Conference will explore the theme of “Energy of Motion: Experiencing Change in Kinetic California.” Attendees will reflect on the ways in which our world is endlessly in flux and how ongoing changes and movements around us touch on and motivate our work. There are many forms of energy in our world which impact our movements through social, economic, intellectual, and creative spheres. This kinetic energy, in even our most causal interactions, helps individuals to “bounce off” one another and create broader intersections between groups and communities. The exchange subsequently creates friction and conflict between the “haves” and “have nots,” the “powerful” and “powerless,” those whose voices have been heard and those whose voices have been silenced. As no one person is immune to such energy and friction, we rely on our experiences in the humanities to help us contextualize our energetic interactions and grow so that we may positively influence and support one another. Some themes we will explore at the conference include:

- Moving Images
- Social Movements
- Movement of the Earth
- Movement in the Humanities
Additionally, the conference will explore best practices of humanities organizations and examine ways to build capacity in a variety of session formats, including panels, lightning rounds, workshops, experiential and offsite sessions, and lectures. These sessions will focus on communication strategies, audience cultivation, effective administration, advocacy and case-making, impact evaluation, leadership development, and fundraising.
The 2022 National Humanities Conference is co-organized by the Federation of State Humanities Councils and the National Humanities Alliance in partnership with California Humanities.
